Without a doubt, Gran Hotel de México is an amazing prime example of Art Noveau in all of the contry. Its history dates back to 1529, few years after de Spaniard's conquest, a time when three houses gave life to the Merchant's Porch on the corner of 16 de septiembre and 5 de febrero streets. In the year of 1896, Sebastian Robert ordered the construction of the new building on the area of one of those houses, a former property of Rodrigo de Albornoz. The new structure lodged the first main store of Mexico: the Commercial Center, where luxurious jewelry, import fabrics, fine hats and suits, among other select articles, were exhibited.
