The Gran Hotel Ciudad de México impresses from the moment you step inside. An immaculate Tiffany stained-glass ceiling towers five stories above the lobby, while a stunning Louis XV-style chandelier and gilded open elevators add to the elegant ambience.

It’s no wonder that this historic, Art Nouveau hotel has earned a reputation as being one of the most beautiful structures in all of Mexico City.

But this building wasn’t always a hotel. Constructed in 1899 for a merchant named Jose de Teresa, it was first known as the Mercantile Center. The building stood as an example of how Mexico was modernizing its building techniques, by using iron and concrete, at the end of the 19th Century.

Soon after its construction, the Mercantile Center became the most exclusive department store in Latin America. It wasn’t until 1968 that the building’s owner decided to turn it into a hotel before the Olympic Games were held in Mexico City. And so the Gran Hotel Ciudad de México was born.

The building went through one more transformation between 2003 and 2005, undergoing a $25 million restoration that has helped to preserve its most compelling historical features.
